I was first introduced to Japanese pop culture when I was a child. My father bought me some imported Ultraman figures at a comic book convention and I thought they were really cool. I wanted to learn more about Ultraman, so I rented some video cassettes from a local shop. My favorite part of Ultraman was definitely the variety of monsters that appeared in every episode. As I got a little older I discovered Godzilla films, and later started watching shows like the Super Sentai and Kamen Rider series. I was amazed that there were so many unique, original monsters created in all of these series, and I fell in love with Japanese ‘tokusatsu’ films and TV series.
My favorite monster is called Gan Q. It is a giant eyeball monster that first appeared in 1998 in Ultraman Gaia. I like him so much that I keep a figure on my desk. I hope that when my son is older he is also interested in ‘kaiju’ and TV monsters.
