On October 1st, my son, Kairi, turned one! To celebrate his birthday we took him to the Higashiyama Zoo in Nagoya. Kairi didn’t really care too much about the zoo, but he loves birds so we spent a lot of time at the bird house. My mother came in from America to be here for Kairi’s birthday, which was really nice. After the zoo, we went home and baked Kairi a cake. I made the batter using bananas and apple sauce. In America, many people make what is called a “smash cake” for their baby’s first birthday. Babies use their hands to eat the cake and usually make a big mess. It’s a lot of fun, so we decided to do that for Kairi. I was worried that he might not like the cake, but he loved it! And I was also happy that he made a HUGE mess eating it. A lot has changed in the last year since he was born. He’s a lot bigger and he talks a lot. I’m looking forward to seeing how he grows over this next year.
