Even though I have never owned any pets while I have lived here in Japan, I have always loved animals. I always had dogs and cats while I was growing up, and I constantly looked forward to every opportunity to visit zoos, friends’ homes that had pets, or even to farms of family friends or extended family members that had farm animals such as cows, pigs, or horses. The only animals that I really don’t care for are snakes, but I really enjoy playing and interacting with almost any other kind of animal, especially dogs and cats.
Just a few weeks ago I got a message from my parents that they recently adopted a new puppy, and it has really awakened my want to have a pet of my own for my family here in Japan. I think having pets is a great way for children to learn a lot about responsibility, and pets often help bring a lot of joy, fun, and love to a home, even if sometimes they also bring a few messes and chaos, too. My parents named their new puppy Willy and it is a miniature schnauzer and will only be about 4 or 5kg at most when it grows up, so it is will be a good-sized dog for them. Not too big and not too small. And as you can see from the picture, he is very cute! I am excited because I will be going back to my parents’ home in Michigan during the summer vacation and will get to play with him a lot during that visit. I just hope I don’t have to help too much with the potty training. Yuck.
